The European alliance of social protection systems

The development of the European Single Market and in particular the free movement of citizens across the European Union call for greater cooperation between national social insurance systems. To this end, the European Social Insurance Platform was created in 1996 and, since January 2009, ESIP exists as a legal entity under Belgian law.

Today, ESIP as a strategic platform gathers 46 national social security institutions in 18 Member States and Switzerland. ESIP covers all branches of social insurance including health, pensions, family and social inclusion, disability and rehabilitation, and unemployment.

Visibility, Foresight and Impact

ESIP is:
  • A platform for transnational dialogue between national social security institutions in Europe

  • A strategic alliance for developing common positions to influence the European decision-making process

  • A consultation forum for the European institutions and other multinational bodies active in the field of social security

ESIP’s mission is threefold:
  • To preserve high-profile social security for Europe

  • To reinforce solidarity-based social insurance systems

  • To maintain European social protection quality

Why ESIP?

Through the ESIP office in Brussels, Members can closely monitor the socio-economic and political developments in the EU, elaborate and submit their joint positions and recommendations to the European Institutions, thus enabling them to participate directly in the decision-making processes at the European level in support of solidarity-based social insurance systems.

Activities in the service of its members

In modernising and adapting social protection to changes in European societies, the responsible organisations need to make their own contribution. ESIP showcases the work of its Members to European decision makers, consistently provides its Members with information on the latest EU agenda developments and facilitates contact with the policy makers. It brings national experts together on a regular basis in permanent committees and working groups dealing with pensions, healthcare, disability and rehabilitation, family and social inclusion, social security for liberal professions.

A permanent team in Brussels

ESIP's office is located at the heart of the political centre of Brussels at the “Maison Européenne de la Protection Sociale”, close to the European Parliament and all relevant Directorate Generals of the European Commission concerned with social and health policies.
